Do You Suffer from Entrepreneur Imposter Syndrome?

Updated: Sep 7, 2019

YES!! It's a real thing, and I think we need to talk about it more, I come across business owners every day that I can sense are suffering from it. 🤥 ⠀⠀ How does it manifest?

⠀⠀ 1) Feeling like a fraud when calling yourself an entrepreneur 2) When in the company of other business owners feeling as though you may be exposed or unmasked 3) Not feeling deserving of success and achievements 4) Feeling like a failure ⠀⠀ THE TRUTH IS THAT MANY ENTREPRENEURS HAVE SUFFERED FROM IT! ⠀⠀ I suffered from entrepreneur imposter syndrome for a long time, even when I was kicking some incredible goals. For example, when I was a national finalist for EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award, a tremendous accolade and prestigious award in the business community. I told myself that they just needed a token female, thus ruining any satisfaction from the event. 😩 ⠀⠀ There is a lot of theory on the internet from psychologists about what causes it, e.g., growing up in households with perfectionist parents, etc. However, after many years as an entrepreneur, I see it a bit more practically. ⠀⠀ 👉Most entrepreneurs feel overwhelmed almost immediately about how much they don't know; this translates into feelings of inadequacy rather than an acknowledgment that to become an experienced business owner usually takes about 8-10 years, so what you are embarking on is a learning journey, do courses, get a mentor, make a commitment to develop your weaker areas.

👉Business owners often compare apples 🍏 with oranges 🍊 . So if you are a newbie entrepreneur, you are comparing yourself to someone five years in. If you have very little capital you are comparing yourself to a fully funded company. Compare like with like!

👉We lose track of our WHY and focus on our performance/turnover. It is my honest belief that your why is more important, because I believe that every entrepreneur has been called to do a particular business and impact the world in some way, step back and have a look at the bigger picture. 🦋🌈
